June 16 is International Biotechnology Day. On June 16, 1980, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of Ananda Mohan Chakrabarty, a genetic engineer who developed a bacterium derived from the genus Pseudomonas that could break down crude oil and thus clean up oil spills faster and with less damage to the environment.
